BENZARO, Calif. –Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at a higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease (CVD) when they are in their 20s and 40s, a study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego found.
The findings were published Thursday in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine, showing that men who have sex with men (MSM) and other sexually active people are more at risk of CVD than men who do not have sex.
In men who have sex with men, the risk of CVD increases by about a third as time progresses and the disease becomes more widespread, according to the study.
The study involved more than 1,000 men who were aged 35 to 64. Participants received a questionnaire about their sexual experiences and were asked to rate their likelihood of dying from CVD in four domains, including health-related quality of life, sexual satisfaction, and sexual function.
In the first six months of the study, more than a third of the participants had taken at least one medication, including Viagra or another erectile dysfunction drug.
Those taking any of the medications who were 65 or older had a 20% greater risk of dying from CVD. In men with a history of erectile dysfunction or diabetes, the risk of CVD increases by about four times as much as that for those who don’t have sexual dysfunction.
The results are significant because they show that for every 1% increase in the risk of dying from CVD, one in 10 people will have a more serious form of CVD. This is important because CVD is the leading cause of death in the U. S., and if you have a history of CVD, you’re at a higher risk of dying from CVD.
“A number of years ago, when a guy was struggling to get an erection for the first time, he was just not interested enough in it to have sex. Now, he’s used that desire to be intimate and to have sex with his partner,” said co-author Joshua S. Hogen, M. D., assistant professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.
The study is an important reminder of the growing awareness that erectile dysfunction can have serious health consequences. More than half of all U. S. adults have some form of CVD.
For some people with erectile dysfunction, the risk of CVD is about 50% greater than for people who don’t have any sexual dysfunction. That’s because erectile dysfunction often occurs in men and women who have sexual partners, such as men who have had an or had a partner with either erectile dysfunction or a sexually active partner.
“The good news is that these data do come from a large population of men,” said Dr. Hogen.
But Dr. Hogen said the findings underscore the need to monitor for CVD and to address the risk factors that can contribute to CVD in those who have sex with men.
“We need to recognize that there is a high potential for cardiovascular disease,” Dr. Hogen said.
He said that while some of the studies had a small sample size, they were based on a large population of men.
But the study didn’t examine the risk of CVD itself, which could be linked to other factors. For example, researchers have found that erectile dysfunction and diabetes, both conditions that contribute to CVD, are linked to an increased risk of CVD. If those risk factors aren’t present, men who have sex with men may be at greater risk of dying from CVD.
The findings were published in the journal, and the study was funded by the National Institute on Aging. Hogen, who is also an associate professor of medicine, is co-lead author of a new study published in.
“I’m confident that we’ll see a large number of people who have sex with men, but I’m also confident that we’ll see a large number of people who have sex with men who are at greater risk of CVD,” said Hogen, who is also professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.
The study was a follow-up of the previous study, which involved more than 1,000 men who were aged 35 to 64.
